The U.S. Copyright Office (File Form TX)
www.copyright.gov
Any author who wants to publish his or her
work should consider submitting an
application (with a sample of their work) to
the U.S. Copyright office for increased
protection.
International Standard Book Number
(ISBN)
www.isbn.org
Most bookstores and online retailers will
require your title to have an ISBN. An ISBN
is a unique number assigned to only one
book title, which assures a bookstore and
the consumer that they are receiving the
correct book.
Library of Congress Control Number
(LCCN)
www.loc.gov
Though not required, it is still useful to have
a LCCN assigned to your book. This aides
libraries and other organizations who
would like more information on your
specific title.
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
www.uspto.gov
This website is a great reference to see
what names are already being claimed as
registered trademarks.
Internal Revenue Service (File Form SS-4)
To obtain a Federal Employer Identification
Number from the IRS
www.irs.gov
Requesting an EIN gives you a layer of
protection against identity theft. Some
retailers require this number (or your social
security number) before they will send you
payment for a book order.
Illinois Department of Revenue
(File Form REG-1)
To register with the Illinois Dept of Revenue
as a retailer or reseller
www.revenue.state.il.us
In order to sell your books directly to
bookstores or to the general public, Illinois
residents must register with the Illinois
Department of Revenue. Other states have
similar regulations; please contact your
individual state's department of revenue.
Barcode Vendors
www.fotel.com or www.barcode-us.com or
other vendors
Though not required, barcodes make your
book more appealing to bookstores and
other retailers. Some retailers may charge
you a per book handling fee to manually
add a barcode sticker if one is not already
present.
